Charges Filed Against Police Officer Responsible for the Death of Samuel Dajon Sterling
April 17th, 2024, Detective Sergeant Brian Keely of the MSP operating on the Fugitive Task force in pursuit of Mr. Sterling, was found to be “legally, grossly negligent” says Nessel. In body, dash and neighboring business cameras, Keely is seen pulling into a Kentwood Burger King in an unmarked cruiser, turning towards Samuel Sterling, hitting and pinning him against the building. Upon backing up, Sterling falls to the ground as he is released from the vehicle's hold. Samuel Dajon Sterling would be taken to the University of Michigan Metro hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Upon completion of their investigation, the Michigan Attorney General's office has found that Keely’s actions “created a very high risk of death or great bodily harm which could have otherwise been prevented.”
Detective Sergeant Brian Keely has been charged in the Kentwood 62B District Court with one count of murder in the second degree -a life offense, or alternatively one count of involuntary manslaughter - a felony that holds the weight of 15 years in prison.
Detective Sergeant Brian Keely has been suspended without pay since this investigation and is awaiting arraignment. No date has been set.
